LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) – The Louisville Cardinals have made a change to their rotation.
Sophomore left-hander Brendan McKay will start the team’s opener against Virginia Tech Saturday, replacing struggling senior right-hander Kyle Funkhouser who drops to third in the rotation. Left hand junior Drew Harrington will be the team’s number 2 starter.
Funkhouser hasn’t been himself this season. He is 2-2 in six starts. He has a team worst 4.89 ERA.
“These things happen. They will only prepare you for baseball down the road,” said head coach Dan McDonnell on Funkhouser’s slump. “The struggles that Funk has gone though, he’s only going to be better off in the long run.”
McKay is 5-1 this season for Louisville (20-5) with a team best 1.10 ERA. He said Thursday he looks forward to the challenge of leading the team into the weekend series.
“It’s a different day. Everyone expects you to have your best stuff” said McKay. “You need to go out there and pound the strike zone and help the team out as much as you can.”
Louisville hosts Virginia Tech Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
