LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One local safety group says most car seats they check are not put in the right way.

Safe Kids Louisville partnered with Prospect Police to offer free safety checks Saturday. They made sure the seats were installed correctly and facing the right way.

They also told parents about any possible recalls.

Organizers say about 90 percent of the car seats they see are installed incorrectly.

"People just need to know the basic things, read their instructions for putting it in..." said Sharon Rengers with Safe Kids Louisville. "But making sure the babies are gonna be in harnesses correctly, below their shoulders, that the straps are snug on them and the retainer clip - the chest clip - is in the midline of their chest."

Safe Kids says children should be in a rear-facing car seat until their second birthday.
