Adopt-a-Tree giveaway aimed at increasing Louisville's tree canopy

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Free trees were handed out Sunday at Bernheim Forest, part of an effort to increase the area's tree canopy.

It was the annual Arbor Day Adopt-a-Tree giveaway, where about 1,500 trees were distributed to community members to plant in their yards.

The park's nursery manager says the adoptable trees are bare-root seedlings up to three years old.

"They're all Kentucky natives," said Renee Hutchison, the Bernheim Forest Nursery Manager. "Bare root trees generally root a lot faster and establish a lot better than container trees. So there's a pretty high success rate, and sometimes it's people's first experience with planting trees in their yard."

The trees are free, but donations were accepted.

Bernheim Forest is also featuring a traveling exhibit called Vanishing Acts, which sheds light on rare and endangered trees.

That runs through July 5.
