OLDHAM COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) – A student at South Oldham High School was killed in a crash over the weekend in Georgia as he and his family drove to Universal Studios for spring break.
Jacob Davis, 15, was flown Saturday from the scene of the crash to a hospital in Tallahassee, Fla. His family says he died Sunday from his injuries.
“It’s your family’s worst nightmare," said Beth Searcy, a close family friend and neighbor. "They were on their way to have an incredible week together. I’m sure it was something they had planned for and looked forward to for a long time, and it’s just, it’s a nightmare.”
Davis was a sophomore at South Oldham High School where he was in the marching band.
“He was an incredible musician. He had a gift like I’ve never seen,” Searcy said. “He was a sweet boy. He was always very kind.”
Davis’ family called him a “military brat,” saying he lived all over, including Germany.
About five years ago, Davis settled in Oldham County with his parents and his two older siblings.
“They’re a very close family, and the family unit as a whole is very kind and giving,” Searcy said.
Searcy says the Davis family had helped her in the past, so she wanted to do something to help them. She started a GoFundMe page to raise money to fly the family back to Kentucky.
“The thought of them having to get in a car and drive home, that distance, after the tragedy they had been through ... it just didn’t seem right,” Searcy said.
The GoFundMe page raised more than $10,000 in about two hours. By Monday night, about $20,000 had been raised.
Over the phone, Davis’ mother, Dawn told WDRB that she is “so grateful for everybody’s support and prayers.”
As of Monday night, the family remains in Tallahassee, where Davis’ organs will be donated.
Principal Jeff Griffin with South Oldham High School released a statement Monday:
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Davis family as we mourn the loss of their son, Jacob. The entire SOHS family will miss him greatly. District counselors will be available as needed for students when we return to school on April 11.”
Ryan McAllister, the Band Director at South Oldham High School released his own statement Tuesday:
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Jacob Davis during this difficult time. Jacob was a very talented musician and dedicated member of the South Oldham High School Band. He was loved by all of his fellow band members and we are all grieving the loss of this amazing young man."
