LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino said he was aware that the self-imposed scholarship reductions and recruiting restrictions announced by the school Wednesday were coming, and that he supports the university’s decision.

U of L announced the reduction of two scholarships, one in 2017-18 and one in 2018-19, plus the loss of two official visits and 30 “recruiting opportunities,” which amounts to Pitino and his staff staying off the recruiting trail in the month of April, plus six other recruiting trips.

“We fully support the university’s decisions,” Pitino said. “We will try to work twice as hard to get through these penalties. We will have to make the right decisions recruiting.”

Pitino said he couldn’t speak to anything concerning the NCAA process specifically. A source close to the investigation has told WDRB that Pitino still has yet to speak with NCAA investigators, but the coach wouldn’t confirm or deny any communication with the NCAA, or whether or when any such meeting might be scheduled.

The Cardinals missed the 2016 NCAA Tournament after school officials determined that violations had occurred within the program related to allegations made by a former Louisville escort who said she provided strippers and prostitutes to U of L players and recruits in exchange for money from then-director of basketball operations Andre McGee.

U of L has not received an official notice of allegations from the NCAA in the matter, but is taking steps to try to “expedite the NCAA process,” while putting sanctions in the hopes of moving past the matter once a resolution is reached.
