BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) – The Louisville man suspected of shooting another man Tuesday afternoon in Bardstown has been arrested.

Bardstown Police say 28-year-old Darnell McGee was taken into custody late Wednesday in Louisville.

Police had been searching for McGee since Tuesday afternoon, when he's accused of shooting 33-year-old John Chesser in the area of N. 3rd Street and Daugherty Avenue.

Chesser’s girlfriend -- who did not want her name used -- says she and her boyfriend were on a walk. She says Chesser started talking to McGee, who he appeared to know, so she walked away.

“I hear that he’s got a gun, and when I initially turned around, the first shot had already been fired,” the woman said. “The second shot is when it jammed the gun, and I seen that one, ‘cause I was running after him after that. Then, John ran after him.”

Chesser’s girlfriend says the third bullet hit the victim in the thigh, and he was flown to University Hospital. She says he could lose his leg.

A bullet also shattered the window of Fisher’s Auto Supply near the shooting scene.

“I just heard kind of a loud boom, and then immediately after that, glass falling,” described Gary Morgan, an employee at Fisher’s. “It ain’t everyday you’re dodging bullets.”

“We heard a gunshot,” described Wendy Ackley, who lives near the scene.

Ackley says she saw the accused gunman run past her home: “Some lady was chasing him down the street, saying ‘He’s got a gun. Call 911.”

Bardstown Police say McGee will be charged with attempted murder, wanton endangerment, criminal mischief, and firing a weapon in city limits.
