Veterans and their families honored Saturday in Jeffersontown

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Saturday was Military Children's Appreciation Day at Veterans Memorial Park in Jeffersontown.

From a bouncy house and petting zoo to face painting and circus acts, this was the second year celebrating our veterans and their families.

But the adults also learned more information about organizations like the library and YMCA.

Organizers say the day is a way for veterans to learn about resources available to them in the community.

"That is a huge part of the transitioning piece of veterans," said Lindsay Gargotto, the organizer of the event and also a veteran.

"As we come out of the military, it's what a lot of us miss. You live on base, it's very insular ... We come out, and it's like a whole different world. And so this is a way to kind of bring that back for military families."

The event was hosted by Athena's Sisters and the American Legion Post 244.

Families of first responders were also invited.
