New Orleans police are reportedly investigating a deadly double shooting that left at least one dead and another wounded late Saturday.

Law enforcement sources told WVUE-TV and The New Orleans Times-Picayune the deceased male victim in the incident has been identified as former New Orleans Saints defensive lineman Will Smith.

Police said the shooting occurred in the Lower Garden District at around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Sophie Wright and Felicity Streets. The 34-year-old victim was driving a Mercedes Benz SUV when he was rear-ended by a man driving a Hummer H2. The collision caused the Mercedes to hit a Chevrolet Impala.

New Orleans Police Department spokesman Juan Barnes told the Times-Picayune the victim and the driver of the Hummer got into a confrontation over the accident when the driver of the Hummer pulled out a handgun and “shot the male victim multiple times and his 34-year-old wife twice in the right leg.”

Police haven’t officially identified Smith as the victim in the shooting. The Times-Picayune reported that the victim was slumped over the steering wheel and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Janis Baehr, a tourist in town for a local festival, told the paper she was walking near in the intersection and heard six gunshots. She said the woman appeared to have two gunshot wounds in her leg. The woman was taken away by an ambulance.

The coroner’s office is still investigating the incident.

Police said the driver of the Hummer was identified as a 30-year-old. The individual was in police custody and being questioned by investigators. According to the TV station, the weapon used in the shooting was recovered by the police.

Smith last played for the New Orleans Saints in 2012. He was signed by the New England Patriots in 2014 but didn’t make the final cut. He was 34.
