Feds urging the public to beware of dishonest tax return preparers

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With Tax Day looming, federal officials are urging the public to avoid dishonest tax return preparers.

The U.S. Attorney warns that some preparers will do things like claim credits for homes, dependents, and education credits for which the taxpayer was not eligible -- but when you sign your name on your return, you become part of the problem. When he or she signs the document, he or she is ultimately held responsible for what is or isn't claimed in the return.

The U.S. Attorney also warns to keep a close eye on your social security number and other documents. Scammers have been known to steal identities to file false claims.

There is some good news, procrastinators: Tax Day falls on Monday, April 18, instead of Friday, April 15, because of Emancipation Day.
