Kentucky drivers urged to slow down in work zones

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is asking drivers to slow down and pay attention -- particularly in work zones.

It's Work Zone Awareness Week, and the KYTC says construction usually picks up in April. Drivers are urged to be alert in work zones, watch for speed limit changes and be patient.

KYTC says national numbers show one person dies every 13 hours in a work zone-related crash. One person is hurt every 13 minutes.

"Over the last 50 years, we've had 93 highway workers in Kentucky who have died in work zone crashes," said Andrea Clifford of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. "Two of them within the last six months."

"Just like you want to go home and be with your family every night, they want to go home to their family and friends as well," Clifford added.

Work Zone Awareness Week lasts until Friday.
