LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) – Future Kentucky Wildcat guard Brad Calipari will take the floor at Louisville’s Freedom Hall Friday night as part of the 44th Annual Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic. At a practice at Male on Wednesday, he says he’s prepared to prove that he not only belongs in this all-star event, but also at the University of Kentucky, where he will walk-on for his father, head coach John Calipari.

The 6’0 guard had interest from East Tennessee State and Liberty, but opted for UK.

“A lot of people think things are just handed to me because my dad is who he is, he makes me earn everything.” said the future UK guard. “I don’t try to put any pressure on myself, because for my game, it’s not good.”

Calipari’s Derby Classic team will face a team that includes Indiana signees De’Ron Davis, a 6’10 forward who is iffy for the game because of an injury and 6’4 guard Curtis Jones, who played with current IU big man Thomas Bryant at Huntington Prep.

“It’s exciting (to play in the game). It gets me motivated going into my freshman year and to work hard over the summer,” said Jones before practicing with his team at Male High School.

“To play with a bunch of different players from a bunch of different schools and the experience of just being here and playing with Curtis and the fans are always going to be there, (it’s) going to be fun,” Davis said.

Joining the two Indiana signees is Bullitt East guard Tyler Sharpe, who will be a preferred walk-on for the Louisville Cardinals this coming season.

“It’s a great event with a lot of great players. When they invited me, I knew it was going to be a great opportunity,” Sharpe said.

The teams will be at New Albany High School Thursday night at 7 for the Night of Future Stars skills competition and then head to Freedom Hall for Friday’s main event, scheduled for a 7pm tipoff.
