LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville made it four consecutive wins over its rivals from Kentucky on the baseball diamond, beating the Wildcats 9-6 Wednesday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington.
U of L Redshirt Freshman Drew Ellis made the most of back-to-back plate appearances with the bases loaded. The Jeffersonville High School product drove in two runs with a flair to short left-field in the third off Wildcat starter Zach Logue to make it 4-0 Cardinals. Both runs were unearned after a pair of errors. Ellis then greeted reliever Bo Wilson with a double to the fence in left-center in the fifth, clearing the bases and pushing the Cardinal advantage to 7-0.
Kentucky kept chipping away with two runs in the fifth, a single run in the sixth and three in the 8th, capped off by Dorian Hairston's two-run homer off Zack Burdi to make it 7-6 after eight.
Colin Lyman's pinch-hit single down the left-field line in the top of the ninth scored a couple and gave Louisville its final winning margin.
Sophomore right-hander Kade McClure allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) in six innings of work to push his record to 7-0 on the season.
Next up for Louisville (26-7) is a weekend ACC series at home against 18th-ranked Clemson. Kentucky (22-10) has a weekend series at No. 4 Vanderbilt also starting Friday.
