Fast-growing gorilla celebrates one month birthday at the Louisville Zoo

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- She's small, hairy and downright adorable -- just look at that face!

The Louisville Zoo's newest gorilla will be one month old on April 15.

The baby girl was orphaned when her mom - Mia Moja - died following complications from birth.

The tiny gorilla is now at Gorilla Forest where she is able to see, hear and smell other gorillas.

Staff has been providing round-the-clock care for the baby.

Zookeepers will soon begin the long and detailed process of introducing her to two possible surrogates - Kewli and Paki.

Both are adult female gorillas that shared the social group with her mom and father Mshindi.

Staff will get a little help from an expert in the field.

Cincinnati Zoo Primate Curator Ron Evans, who is also a member of the Gorilla Species Survival Plan committee, will visit the Louisville Zoo Friday.

Evans help Louisville's zookeepers evaluate Kweli and Paki for possible surrogacy.

By the way, the baby gorilla has not yet been named. The zoo will announce her name soon.

Zoo officials also say they'll announce times and places you and see the baby gorilla.
