Attorney for teen charged with killing man near Churchill Downs says it was an accident
Rion Graves pleaded not guilty to murder in court on April 15, 2016.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man charged with murder after his best friend was fatally shot earlier this week was in court this morning.
The shooting happened at a home near Evelyn and Cliff Avenues near Churchill Downs early Thursday. Police say 18-year-old Rion Graves has admitted to shooting 19-year-old Dustin Osborne.
Graves' attorney, Keith Kamenish, says Graves and Osborne were best friends and that the shooting was a tragic accident.
"The boy that was shot is his best friend - almost like a brother to him," Kamenish said. "About two weeks ago my client was stabbed, pretty badly, in a robbery attempt on him. He was just coming out of a store. He went out and he purchased a .22. His friend came over, he was looking at the gun, and when the gun was being handed back to him,it went off and killed the kid."
Kamenish went on to say that Graves called 911 and immediately started doing CPR after Osborne was shot.
Kamenish also requested the judge lower Graves' $100,000 bond but the judge refused.
A not guilty plea was entered on Graves' behalf. He's due in court again later this year.
