Weekend lane and ramp closures expected as crews begin paving work

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Crews with Walsh Construction are scheduled to place the final surface on a section of I-65 North as part of the Downtown Crossing portion of the Ohio River Bridges Project this weekend.

The work includes paving and striping, and will lead to a number of ramp and lane closures over the weekend.

The following closures are scheduled to begin tonight and end by Monday morning:

  • Ramp from I-65 North to I-64 West
  • Ramp from I-65 North to I-64 East
  • Ramp from I-65 North to I-71 North
  • Ramp from Liberty Street to I-65 North
  • Two lanes of I-65 North (from Liberty Street to I-64/I-71 split)

The closures are scheduled to begin around 9 p.m. Friday, April 15 and end by 5 a.m. Monday, April 18. Signed detours will be in place during the ramp closures, directing drivers to I-265 and I-264. I-65 North will be reduced to one lane of traffic from the Liberty Street ramp to the I-64/I-71 split, with no access from Liberty Street to I-65 North, I-64 West, I-64 East and I-71 North.

The closures will allow two paving trucks to work at the same time, helping to eliminate pavement joints and extending the life of the asphalt.

Ramp from Muhammad Ali to I-65 North to Open
During this weekend’s paving work, crews are also expected to finish work on the new ramp from Muhammad Ali Boulevard to I-65 North. It closed in February. During the closure, the old ramp was demolished, and a new ramp was built to connect with the new Abraham Lincoln Bridge.

The new ramp is opening to traffic ahead of schedule. It was expected to be closed for about three months. It’s reopening after about two months. The ramp is expected to open by 5 a.m. Monday, April 18.
