5-year-old girl who wants a birthday card from every state still needs one from Kentucky

Modesto, Calif. (Fox 40) -- A Modesto girl with special needs has a big birthday wish. All Virginia Parent asked for, for her fifth birthday, is cards from across the country so she can learn about the 50 states.

Danielle Parent, Virginia's mom, said she and her daughter were mailing autistic children cards as part of her charity. That's when Virginia started asking about the different states and said she wanted cards as well.

Her mom took Virginia's wish to social media and America responded. Dozens of strangers from across the country mailed cards to their Modesto home. Almost 100 birthday cards were sent and they're still coming.

"It's very overwhelming... I'm so thankful so grateful for everybody," said Parent.

Virginia is on the autism spectrum but her mom said she's just like any other kid. Her passion for learning about different states, however, makes her unique.

The birthday girl now has little pieces of the country spread across her wall. She even got cards from Canada, Ireland and England.

Because April is Autism Awareness Month, Parent said she hopes Virginia's wish will help others be more accepting of children with special needs.

"They're normal children who might need a little extra help or extra consideration," said Parent.

There are just a few more states Virginia needs cards from to accomplish her goal of getting cards from all 50 states. Maine, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, Vermont, Kentucky, Mississippi and Rhode Island are on that list.
