Louisville Metro Police release game plan for Thunder Over Louisville

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police have outlined their plan to handle traffic flow at this year's Thunder over Louisville.

Officials say hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend this year's airshow and fireworks event -- and they want the public to be safe and prepared for the long day ahead.

LMPD says there will be about 1,240 on-duty officers from several agencies patrolling the Thunder area. Kentucky Derby Festival officials are asking people to leave no earlier than 7 a.m. Saturday, and plan to stay out until about 11 o'clock that evening.

There will be stations for lost children and first aid, including two on the Indiana side and five on the Kentucky side. Officials are also working with local cabs and Uber to make sure everyone has a safe ride.

When it comes to parking, LMPD officials recommend parking as far away from the waterfront as possible to make it easier to leave. If you want to park downtown, limited spots will be available.

And if you decide to pay someone to take the wheel, police have designated Main Street between 4th and 5th Streets as the designated pick-up location Thunder night.

LMPD says it will have 24 boats on the river, the largest amount in Thunder history. This comes after last year's deadly Fourth of July boating accident that claimed the lives of five people.

The Second Street Bridge will close at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, and won't reopen until Sunday afternoon. The Big Four Bridge will be closed all day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

People attending Thunder can get more info regarding parking and street closures online or by calling LMPD's Thunder hotline at 502-689-1440.
