LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Trying to escape from police ends up sending one woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Indiana State Police say they pulled a woman over on I-64 just before the Sherman Minton Bridge around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

During the traffic stop, the trooper found out there was a problem with the woman's driver's license.

After she was placed in handcuffs, police say she tried to get away.

"The driver decided to flee on foot while she was handcuffed, tripped over the guardrail, started rolling to the ground, fell over the top of the concrete embankment here and fell almost 17 feet," said Sgt. Jerry Goodin with the Indiana State Police.

The woman was taken to University Hospital, according to police.

Authorities say suspected heroin and syringes were located during a search of the woman's vehicle.
