LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) – He’s a horse that’s not above throwing a good tantrum from time to time.
“He’ll sometimes want to stop. He’ll stop,” said Keita Tanaka, agent for owner Ms. Yoko Maeda. “He’ll yell and scream.”
Lani does what he wants to do, when he wants to do it.
But when he decides he wants to win, well that’s everyone should take notice.
“He is not a calm temperament,” said Tanaka. “He has lots of fighting spirit. He is a tough horse.”
The son of Tapit, showed that toughness in a last-to-first effort in the March 26 UAE Derby in Dubai. Lani who is trained by Mikio Matsunaga, looks to become the first UAE horse to not only hit the board at the Kentucky Derby but win it.
“This is a long project to bring this horse to the Kentucky Derby. The plan has been solid,” said Tanaka.
At Churchill, they keep Lani in a barn all by himself. It’s not because he’s a trouble maker and doesn’t get along with others. It’s because he’s an import from Japan. He doesn’t have any diseases but regulations require everyone to be extra careful.
“He is very happy to be by himself. Most of the horses don’t like it but he is okay,” said Tanaka.
A rebel and loner.
Who wouldn’t want to root for a horse like that?
