LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kmart will close all but one of its Louisville area stores this summer.

Sears Holdings, its parent company, announced 78 Kmart and Sears store closings on Thursday.

Closings in the Louisville area involve four Kmart stores.

Liquidation sales will start May 12 at stores on Poplar Level Road, Taylorsville Road, and on Grant Line Road in New Albany, Ind., and Dixie Highway in Elizabethtown, Ky.

Sears Holdings has said it would speed up closings of unprofitable stores this year, as it struggles to compete with other brick-and-mortar and online retailers.

The company has closed other, underperforming stores and sold real estate to raise money and restore profitability in recent months.

The Kmart at 191 Outer Loop in Louisville will remain open.

Workers at the closing stores will be eligible for severance and can apply for open positions at other Kmart or Sears stores, the company said.

"The decision to close stores is a difficult but necessary step as we take aggressive actions to strengthen our company, fund our transformation and restore Sears Holdings to profitability," said Sears Holding CEO Edward Lampert in a news release. "We're focusing on our best members, our best categories and our best stores as we work to accelerate our transformation."

These stores will start liquidation sales May 12 and close in late July:

  • Kmart 1809 N. Dixie Highway, Elizabethtown, Ky.
  • Kmart 4025 Poplar Level Road, Louisville, Ky.
  • Kmart 3911 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, Ky.
  • Kmart 3525 Grant Line Road, New Albany, Ind.
