THUNDER REPLAY: Matt Younkin - Twin Beech

Posted: Updated:

Matt Younkin from Arkansas is a third-generation pilot and son of legendary airshow pilot Bobby Younkin, who was considered one of the greatest airshow pilots of all time. (Bobby died in 2005, his son Matt began his own show in 2007.)

Matt is proficient in more than 80 types of airplanes.

Performance is described as one of the most unusual on the airshow circuit today. Beech 18 is a large transport plane that was never designed for aerobatic flight, but that’s what he does!

Performance begins with a roll on takeoff followed by a series of Cuban eights, point-rolls and even a loop.

The Beech 18 he performs in was built in 1943 by Beechcraft in Kansas. It was bought new by the U.S. Army Air Corps and spent most of the war as a navigation trainer. Was also used as a VIP transport for U.S. Dept of Commerce until 1959 before Younkin bought and restored it.
