Charter Communications given permission to purchase Time Warner Cable

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville is one step closer to having a new cable provider.

The Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Justice Department have given permission for Charter Communications to buy Time Warner Cable. The $55 billion deal was announced last year after Time Warner Cable's previous merger with Comcast was blocked.

Charter has promised to boost Internet speeds in Louisville.

Officials have not said yet when the deal will close. It still needs approval from the California Utility Commission.
