LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville surgeon who helped perform the world's first successful hand transplant is retiring.

Dr. Joseph Kutz is retiring at the age of 87.

Kutz made history when he was part of the team in 1999 that performed the first successful hand transplant. He began working with Dr. Harold Kleinert in 1963.

The Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center was later established, and remains one of the largest hand care referral centers in the world.
