Western Kentucky and Indiana each had three players taken in the 2016 NFL Draft. Western Kentucky and Indiana each had three players taken in the 2016 NFL Draft.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – This is the kind of NFL Draft it was for the Western Kentucky football program:

The Hilltoppers had more guys (three) selected than Kentucky, Tennessee or Vanderbilt and as many as five other Southeastern Conference programs (Auburn, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Missouri).

This is the kind of NFL Draft it was for the Indiana University football program:

The Hoosiers had more players selected than Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue, Northwestern and Rutgers as many as three other Big Ten programs (Michigan, Maryland and Illinois).

That is unusual -- and remarkable.

The final local scoreboard:

Western Kentucky three guys: Tyler Higbee, tight end, fourth round, Los Angeles Rams; Brandon Doughty, quarterback, seventh round, Miami Dolphins; Prince Charles Amorah, defensive back, seventh round, San Francisco 49ers.

Indiana three players: Jason Spriggs, offensive tackle, second round, Green Bay Packers; Jordan Howard, running back, fifth round, Chicago Bears; Nate Sudfeld, quarterback, sixth round, Washington Redskins.

Louisville one player: Sheldon Rankins, defensive tackle, first round, New Orleans Saints.

Kentucky one player: Josh Forrest, linebacker, sixth round, Los Angeles Rams.

More draft notes: WKU tied a school record with three draft picks. The school has now had 31 players taken by the NFL … Iworah is a former walk-on. He finished his WKU career with five interceptions and 21 pass break-ups.

In a release by the WKU media relations department, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said this about Iworah:

“Well, he has 4.3 speed. That’s how he comes across. He happened to be at one of the all-star games – that’s where he first noticed him. Then, we went to his Pro Day, saw him work out, and he posted very good numbers at his Pro Day. I think he bench pressed 25 reps, which, at his weight, is incredible. He’s a talented young man who can really run. He’ll come in here like the rest of them and really compete.”

“He has blue traits in his body. What we call them – run, jump, change direction, physically can do all those things.”

For IU, it was the first time since 2010 that three Hoosiers were drafted. Sudfeld is the first IU quarterback selected since the Redskins took Gibran Hamdan in 2003.
