Make a Derby fashion statement with color, hats and a little attitude

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Derby week is fashion week in Louisville. Nothing makes a bigger statement around Derby time than a great outfit and a fantastic hat.

Fashion expert and stylist Jo Ross is showing some styles you may see in the infield, on millionaire's row or in the stands at the historic Churchill Downs.

She's put together a variety of selections for any occasion.

Ross has everything from ponchos and stoles for the cool, rainy weather that is part of spring in Kentucky. And she runs down the latest trends with prints, florals, stripes, abstracts, and the little touches that make a statement.

And fashion isn't just for the ladies. Men are spotted all over the track wearing colorful jackets, bow ties, lapel posies and pocket squares.

This year's hottest colors include many bright pastels including tangerine, lemon and coral. But neutrals are always in style along with classic combinations of black, white and navy blue.

And if you run out of time to get your Derby outfit together, Ross suggests getting a basic dress from your wardrobe and "Derby it up!" Accessories like floral shoes, purses and glitter can add sparkle to any outfit.

Ross has a variety of designers she suggests for women including Lilly Pulitzer, Trina Turk, Eliza J, Vince Camuto, Tahari Taylor, Jax, Jessica Howard, Elizabeth McKay, Kate Spade, Longchamps, Frank Olive and Betsey Johnson.

For men, Ross pulls inspiration from Robert Graham, Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, Tallia, Bugatchi, Brackish, Judy Kushner, Beau Ties, Cole Haan

and Donald Pliner.

Many of the outfits shown by Ross on WDRB in the Morning during Derby week come from Von Maur at Oxmoor Center.
