Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer forms task force to help preserve historic buildings

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The city comes up with a plan to avoid another battle over saving historic buildings from the wrecking ball.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer announced he's forming the Historic Preservation Advisory Task Force. The group will identify historic buildings and plans for how to re-use them.

The task force will include the mayor, up to 21 people he appoints and a Metro Council member.

This comes after preservationists fought to save the old Louisville Water Company Building, which was in the path of the new Omni Hotel project.

"We've got to get more proactive and that's one thing that led to today. We want to take all alternatives into play, but the best case scenario is when it makes sense to incorporate historic structures into any type of development," Mayor Fischer said.

The facades of the old Louisville Water Company Building were saved to be preserved.
