Trainer Ron Moquett hopes jockey can help Whitmore win the Kentucky Derby
The Louisville-based trainer is putting faith in his horse and in Triple Crown jockey Victor Espinoza.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Whitmore is a horse that was getting little press at Churchill Downs, until his Derby jockey arrived.
Louisville-based trainer Ron Moquett says Whitmore met jockey Victor Espinoza in the barn on Monday. Espinoza watched Moquett's wife Laura gallop the horse. And he's a believer in the third place finisher for the Arkansas Derby. And he posted on social media that he has the skills to help Whitmore win roses.
And you can't argue with his track record. Espinoza will be looking for his third straight Kentucky Derby victory and fourth overall when he climbs aboard Whitmore for the first time Saturday. He won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes with California Chrome in 2014 and then became the first rider to win the Triple Crown in 37 years last year, when American Pharoah swept the Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Espinoza also won the Kentucky Derby in 2002 with War Emblem.
Moquett says if they have a good trip, they'll be wearing roses on Saturday.
