LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Former President Bill Clinton spoke on behalf of his wife, Hillary Clinton, in Louisville on Tuesday afternoon.

The event took place at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

President Clinton was a little late for the rally, but the crowd did not seem to mind. The former president made several stops around town before heading to the rally.

And it appears to be better late than never as Mr. Clinton came out to a familiar song and enthusiastic supporters. His speech started with a shoutout to a Louisville legend.

"I am glad to be in the home neighborhood of a man who became my friend about 20 years ago this year, Muhammad Ali," President Clinton said.

After talking a little Kentucky Derby, he was all business, explaining why he thinks Kentucky should support Hillary Clinton in the primary on May 17.

"What Hillary wants to do is take us back to real growth, to reduce inequality by building middle class incomes, getting more jobs and increasing upward mobility."

The Clintons have been hitting Kentucky hard. Both voters and local politicians appreciate the attention.

"I think it's great. They see Kentucky is going to be in play in the general election," Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said. "Kentucky loves the Clintons, and of course we voted twice for Bill Clinton. Hillary has got the package right now."

Mayor Fischer also reminds voters of something they heard in the 90s ... with Clinton you get two for one.

"I think with Hillary at the top of the ticket and him as the future first dude, our country is in good shape," Fischer said.

President Clinton also said his wife wants to help small businesses here in Kentucky and across the country.
