Interstate ramps from Court Avenue, Story Avenue to reopen this week

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two new ramps are scheduled to open this week as crews with Walsh Construction continue to make progress on the Downtown Crossing portion of the Louisville/Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project.

According to a news release, the ramp from Court Avenue to I-65 South (Jeffersonville) and the ramp from Story Avenue to I-64 West are scheduled to open Thursday, May 5. The Court Avenue ramp is expected to open early in the morning, and the Story Avenue ramp is scheduled to open by late afternoon.

Ramp from Court Avenue to I-65 South
The ramp from Court Avenue to I-65 South reopened at 5 a.m. on Thursday.

The ramp closed at the end of February. During the closure, crews with Walsh Construction demolished the old ramp and built a new one. The new ramp will continue to carry traffic to its temporary position, with I-65 South traffic utilizing lanes of the Abraham Lincoln Bridge to cross the Ohio River.

The new ramp will eventually connect with the improved John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge. The Kennedy Bridge will carry six lanes of southbound traffic and the Lincoln Bridge will carry six lanes of northbound traffic by late this year.

During the closure, drivers had been directed to take Spring Street to 10th Street to access I-65 South. The ramp was expected to be closed for about 2-1/2 months. It’s reopening after being closed for just over two months.

Ramp from Story Avenue to I-64 West
The ramp from Story Avenue to I-64 West is scheduled to open to traffic by 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 5.

The ramp closed at the end of August 2015 because of maintenance of traffic issues and construction in the area. During the closure, crews with Walsh Construction demolished the old ramp and built a new one.

It’s important for drivers to know traffic is in a temporary configuration, and they need to slow down and use caution in the area. For now, drivers using the Story Avenue ramp to access either direction of I-65 will continue to cross two lanes of I-64 West traffic.

Engineers with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will be watching the situation closely to monitor traffic flow, and determine if any action is needed before the full opening of the ramp this summer.

Once fully open, the new ramp will improve safety and traffic flow in the area. Drivers will use the left lane of the new ramp to access I-64 West. The right lane will take drivers to I-65 North and I-65 South, eliminating the need to merge across lanes of I-64 traffic. The flyover ramp to I-65 is expected to open this summer.
