LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- When it comes to betting on the Derby winner, U of L head football coach Bobby Petrino's strategy is simple.

"Well I think you just try to pick the fastest one that's going to win, that's what I try to do anyway," Petrino said.

Not surprisingly, Petrino tends to compare racing with football.

"When I watch them -- I like to go down and watch them walk around -- and you kind of correlate them to recruits. You want to pick the first round draft pick and not the walk-on."

Petrino was enjoying his time on the backside on the Thursday before Derby on what is now known as "Thurby" Day.

"We try to get back here at least once a year, just to come out and watch them train," Petrino said. "I like to go back to the barns and see the schedules that they set up, and correlate it to a practice schedule and what we do. It's amazing the organization that they have, and how many horses, and how many training riders, and what time they go out, and what time they bathe them."

Petrino says his pick to win the Derby is Gun Runner (but says that could change).
