More than 39,000 people celebrate 'Thurby' at Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It was the Thursday before Derby or "Thurby" for locals at Churchill Downs.

It was a little chilly outside but "Thurby" lived up to expectations.

"Even though the weather was a little cloudy, we knew that this is such a great event and we wanted to make it a point to be here," said Jerry Mimms, who attended "Thurby" at Churchill.

It may look like Oaks and Derby, but it's not.

"I think it's lovely and this is a time for locals to shine and enjoy themselves," said Kim Milton, who also attended "Thurby".

John Asher is Vice President of Racing Communications for Churchill Downs and said, "I wish it were a hair warmer but everybody seems to be enjoying themselves."

Asher said "Thurby" is officially a local tradition.

"This is our 3rd year for "Thurby" -- which is a new part of The Kentucky Derby week tradition and really a day that's geared to the local fans."

This year, officials say 39,213 people attended "Thurby" at Churchill Downs.

That's up 28% from last year's total of 30,647.
