Churchill Downs VP John Asher shares his picks for Oaks and Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- WDRB in the Morning ran into Vice President of Racing Communications John Asher on the backside at Churchill Downs on Oaks Day and he was nice enough to share his picks for Oaks and Derby.

"For the Oaks, I like a horse named Lewis Bay, she came out of a good race out in New York," Asher said. "She's got a big, big chance to win."

Asher says he likes several horses in the Derby. "I've circled almost everybody at some time, but settled on Mohaymen, Kiaran McLaughlin's lovely horse, who got beat by the favorite last time out. But you don't have to win them all coming up to the Derby, you've got to win the Derby. And I think he's doing awfully well here.

"I think Bob Baffert's got a great chance to win his fifth with Mor Spirit, the horse has already shown he loves the racetrack here. And I love both of the Steve Asmussen horses.

My real long shot for the Derby is a horse named My Man Sam."

Asher says the track has set records for attendance every day during Derby week, including 39,000 on "Thurby" Day -- a 28 percent increase over last year.

"This Derby thing I think might be catching on after 142 years," Asher said. "It has been a great week so far."
