LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- People have been collecting them since the late 1930s.
But this year's Derby and Oaks glasses are leaving much to be desired.
Churchill Downs went with a new vendor this year, PB Licensing, and there have been problems from the start.
First, they arrived months late.
Then, officials started getting lots of complaints about the quality -- bubbles in the glass, they break easily and the paint is easily scraped off.
Churchill Downs says it's stunned, because PB has an impeccable reputation. "We're very disappointed with the performance of that vendor in the first year," spokesperson John Asher said. "We apologize to all of the patrons who love that product and those who revere that part of the Derby tradition. And, trust me, we are working closely, closely with the new vendors to make sure this doesn't happen again."
The glasses also are not dishwasher safe. If you bought one at a retailer, you can return it for a new glass.
Those who buy Derby and Oaks glasses at the track can call 800-941-8089 for a replacement.
