Indiana State Police investigating death of inmate in Clark County

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Clark County Sheriff says Indiana State Police are investigating the death of an inmate.

Candice Wheat was found in a holding cell Saturday morning, just a few hours after her arrest on drug charges.

Sheriff Jamey Noel says she used a piece of clothing to strangle herself.

Officers performed CPR and rushed her to the hospital. She died the next day from complications of asphyxiation.

Investigators say officers were doing hourly checks of Wheat's cell, and that's when a supervisor found her.

"It's tough," said Noel. "It's not easy. I treat everybody in here like they are part of the family whether they did something wrong or not. You don't want to see somebody harm themself either, so it's a tragedy all the way around."

Sheriff Noel says he asked ISP to investigate her death as a matter of transparency.
