Memorial service held in Jefferson Square to honor fallen police officers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The 23rd Annual Peace Officer Memorial Service was held at Jefferson Square this morning to honor fallen police officers.

Fellow law enforcement officers, family members and friends gathered to pay tribute to the men and women who gave their lives. The Memorial's keynote speaker says it's important to remember and recognize the officers who risk their lives everyday.

"It really hits home on those occasions when, like, on Thursday when shots are fired and everyone is running away except the people in the blue suits, and they're running right in the teeth of it," said Judge McKay Chauvin. "So, it's important that we all take a few minutes just to remember that it's a hard job, an important job, one were grateful for."

Six officers lost their lives in Kentucky last year. That is the largest number of deaths in one year for the state.
