LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A petition has been circulating, calling for the resignation or ouster of JCPS Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens. Apparently, over 3,000 people have signed it.
Dr. Hargens may have the most difficult job in Jefferson County, if not the entire state. She has the great responsibility of a CEO, yet the state severely limits her authority. She must manage a budget of $1.4 billion. She has 18,000 employees, and over 100,000 students who speak 130 different languages. She must accept all kids - good, bad, or physically and mentally handicapped.
She has done a very good job of navigating all that. I have never once heard her say anything derogatory about any one of her board members, her teachers, or her students. Never. Not once.
But when some disagree with her attempts to actually manage the district, gain control over expenses, and do her job, even before all facts are known or discussed, some yahoo says, "Let's fire her," and starts a petition. That's the easy part, but you can bet they have absolutely no plan beyond that.
We will never all agree 100 percent with the job Dr. Hargens or anyone else is doing, nor should we. The district didn't hire her to be the Chief Happy Officer. Her job is to manage a beast of an organization, she is doing a good job, and she has my full support.
I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my Point of View.
