Special Olympics athletes compete in track and field competition

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Nearly 300 athletes from the Greater Louisville area ran for the gold on Saturday.

Those athletes with Special Olympics Kentucky competed at St. Xavier High School.

The track and field competition was part of the Special Olympics Spring Games. It’s the last of five weekends for the games.

“I really love watching our relay teams and seeing everyone work together, and seeing our new athletes. For them it’s their first competition and for some of them, it’s their first exposure to Special Olympics events,” said Robyn Ballinger, a Special Olympics coach.

Across Kentucky, 1,300 athletes with intellectual disabilities take part in the regional track and field competitions.

Athletes in Saturday’s event qualify to compete in the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games. Those are held in early June at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
