LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The University of Louisville Board of Trustees will meet Wednesday even though the board is prevented from doing anything of consequence until Gov. Matt Bevin fills two open seats.

Board Chairman Larry Benz said the trustees will be updated on things like dean searches, U of L's response to state budget cuts and "the general affairs of the university."

He said the trustees have an obligation to remain informed even though the board's hands are tied by  March 18 settlement in a lawsuit over its lack of minority membersAs part of the settlement, the trustees agreed not to take “any structural or other significant actions” until Bevin fills the two open seats with appointees who qualify as racial minorities.

But Bevin can't make appointments until a group called the governor's post-secondary education nominating commission meets to recommend candidates to him.

Steve Pitt, Bevin's general counsel, said in an email Monday that his "understanding" is that the nominating committee "is being called to meet in the near future."

The trustees' last regular meeting was Jan. 14. It also had a special meeting on March 1 in which several trustees wanted to take a "no confidence" vote in President James Ramsey

Ramsey's allies on the board previously ensured that the board cannot take such a vote -- which would merely express an opinion and not actually fire Ramsey -- until Bevin's appointees are in place.
