Father of woman murdered in Shelby Park double shooting: 'All indications ... point to a third party'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A post on Facebook on Monday is how Michael Cain says he learned his 42-year-old daughter, Jennifer Cain, had been murdered days earlier.

A deputy coroner in Jefferson County had apparently left a message on Cain’s answering machine, but he says he was out of town.

“There’s no good way to find that out, I guess, but it was pretty much a shock,” Michael Cain said. “You hear about it on the news, about somebody being murdered or shot, but you don’t really think about it happening to you or your family.”

According to LMPD, Jennifer Cain was shot multiple times Friday night inside of her home on Shelby Street in the Shelby Park neighborhood.

Investigators say Cain’s boyfriend was also shot. He was taken to University Hospital with injuries deemed life-threatening.

“They were apparently pretty close. They had been seeing each other for several months,” Cain said. “She was looking forward to me meeting him, and she said he was a nice guy.”

Cain admits his daughter had battled drug problems, and that she’d been in jail. However, he says she was a good-hearted mother of two who didn’t deserve what happened to her.

“I’d like to know what happened, how it happened, why it happened,” Cain said.

While police do know that Jennifer Cain was murdered, investigators say it’s unclear if someone else was involved.

“All indications from what I’ve heard seem to point to a third party,” Cain said. “Whoever did this, I hope they catch them. I hope they go away for a very long time.”

Police say the man shot remains at University Hospital. There's no word on his condition.

Anyone with information in this investigation is asked to call the police tipline at (502) 574-LMPD.
