As the NRA prepares to come to Louisville, moms demand action

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- “They love their firearms ... that's for sure,” said Barry Laws, President and CEO of Openrange.

The NRA last held it's annual meeting in Louisville in 2008. This weekend, it's back again.

"In the last eight years, that organization has grown tremendously,” Executive Vice President of Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau, Cleo Battle said.

About 80,000 people are expected to attend this year; that's 20,000 more than in 2008.

“The economic impact for the NRA is about $53 million to the Louisville region,” Battle said.

“We have 5,000,000 due-paying members. In addition to that, we have tens of millions of other Americans who believe they are members of the National Rifle Association,” Public Affairs Managing Director, Andrew Arulanandam said.

Big names like Matt Bevin, Mike Pence, Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump are expected to attend, but some mothers in the Louisville area are not.

"(More than) 90 Americans die every day from gun violence in our country,” said Connie Coartney, Kentucky Chapter Leader of Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America.

"Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America" say they're not against the Second Amendment. They're just against neglecting to close loop holes that allow dangerous people gun access.

"Seventy-four percent of NRA members support background checks on all gun sales. So we know that the members support our core issues, which is background checks. We just think that the NRA executives are out of step with their membership and what many American's support,” Coartney said.

When Donald Trump speaks at Freedom Hall on Friday, the "Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America" are calling on Trump and the other political leaders to join them and "make America safe again."
