LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The U of L Softball Cardinals will have to go through the loser's bracket to get out of the Columbia, Missouri NCAA Regional.
The Cards lost a 3-2 decision to Nebraska in Thursday's opening game in the double elimination regional. It's Louisville's third defeat in as many games against the Huskers this season.
Madi Unzicker's two-run homer off Maryssa Becker in the bottom of the second gave Nebraska an early 2-0 advantage. Louisville got those right back in the third inning. Hailey Smith singled up the middle with the bases loaded scoring Morgan Meyer and Sydney Melton, tying the game at 2.
It stayed that way into the seventh, when Nebraska's MJ Knighton delivered the game-winner, a sharp ground ball just under the glove of a diving Melton at short with the bases loaded plating the game-winner.
"Clearly, we just didn’t get the job done, said U of L Head Coach Sandy Pearsall. "We made a crucial mistake in the seventh inning that didn’t help us. I thought our team did a great job coming back in and tying up the game. We just needed to get a little more offense going."
Louisville (35-16) will face BYU, a 9-0 loser to Missouri on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (ET) in an elimination game.
