CRAWFORD Preakness Day marred by death of gelding Homeboykris after first race
Former Kentucky Derby competitor Homeboykris won the first race at Pimlico on Preakness day, then collapsed and died on his way back to the barn. A necropsy will be performed on the 9-year-old gelding.
BALTIMORE (WDRB) -- Homeboykris, a 9-year-old gelding who ran in the 2010 Kentucky Derby and won the 2009 Grade 1 Champagne Stakes, collapsed and died after winning the first race of the day Saturday on Preakness Day at Pimlico.
The Maryland-bred scored a half-length victory in the first race, posed for the winner's photo with his connections, then collapsed and died on his way back to the barn.
The 9-year-old drew some attention when he bit a competitor during a race at Churchill Downs in September of 2013. He finished 16th in the Derby in 2010, and won 15 of 64 career starts. He will be taken to the New Bolton Hospital in Pennsylvania for a necropsy.
