LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – A Jeffersonville man takes his marriage proposal to the extreme, enlisting the help of a Louisville Metro Police officer.

A driver was recording video on his cell phone Thursday as an LMPD officer pulled over his friend, Kyle Willis, outside of St. Xavier High School on Poplar Level Road.

Kyle’s girlfriend, Mary Cowart was in the car’s passenger seat, as the couple’s two kids were in the back.

“I said ‘Oh gosh, he got us for speeding,'" Kyle Willis said. “She immediately said, ‘well, maybe you’ll know him.'"

“I didn’t think he was going that fast, but apparently he was,” Mary Cowart added.

Kyle did know the officer, but it didn’t seem to help.

“I was like, ‘man, I know you, chill out.’ He says, ‘no, you know what, get out of the car. You’re gonna come with me,'" Kyle recalled.

“I was freaked out. I was afraid something bad was gonna happen,” Mary said.

“From her rear view, she thinks I’m actually getting arrested, but he’s actually giving me the ring, at the time. She doesn’t know that,” Kyle said.

The LMPD officer then returns to the car for Mary.

“He pulls her out of the car, she loses her mind. She says, ‘I’m going to jail! I’m going to jail!” Kyle said.

“I’m trying to tell the cop, ‘it’s OK, calm down. We weren’t going that fast,'” Mary said.

“He tells us both to get on our knees, and then she doesn’t even notice that I already have the ring out by the time she’s on her knees. As she finally pays attention, she sees the ring, and the proposal begins,” said Kyle.

After six years of dating, Kyle and Mary were engaged.

“I was thinking this is the best proposal idea I could’ve ever possibly done,” Kyle said.

“It was one that I’ll obviously always remember, and I’m glad to share it with my kids and my family,” Mary said.

Kyle says he was inspired to propose this way after watching videos of police officer proposals online.
