LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say they have arrested a man suspected of bringing hundreds of grams of heroin into Louisville.

According to an arrest report, detectives working on an Airport Interdiction detail encountered 22-year-old Edgar Lomeli near Second and Broadway Saturday afternoon. When Lomeli realized he was being watched, police say he threw his backpack and began running, but detectives caught up with him just south of Broadway on Second Street.

Police say Lomeli admitted to having approximately 300 grams of heroin in his backpack, and that's where police found 22 bindles of suspected heroin. According to police, Lomeli also admitted to swallowing 39 bindles of heroin, and still had 17 bindles remaining inside him. He was taken to University Hospital before being booked into Louisville Metro Corrections.

Because Lomeli is not a U.S. citizen, he is considered a flight risk, so detectives asked for a high bond.

Lomeli is currently charged with importing heroin, aggravated trafficking in a controlled substance greater than or equal to 100 grams, tampering with physical evidence and fleeing and evading. Federal charges are expected to follow.

Lomeli is being held at Louisville Metro Corrections on a $250,000 full cash bond.
