LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Your sewer bill could be going up again -- big time.

On Monday the MSD Finance Committee approved a staff recommendation to increase sewer rates by 20 percent next year and the full board voted to approve that recommendation.

The Metro Council must give final approval before the rate increase takes effect.

MSD says the rate hike is necessary because of higher than expected capital expenses.

MSD says it needs to upgrade its 16 pumping stations to address flooding problems throughout the city.

It must also upgrade aging sewer lines.

If approved the average sewer bill would go from just over 49 dollars to almost 59 dollars a month. If the full board approves, then it goes to Metro Council for the final go ahead.

The new rate would take effect in August.
