LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A historic New Albany church is getting a new 65-foot steeple this Thursday.

A lightning strike destroyed the original spire on top of the Town Clock Church more than a century ago. The steeple was paid for with donations and built by volunteers.

The original steeple was visible in Kentucky and served as a beacon of hope for slaves seeking freedom during the Civil War Era.

The church aided fugitive slaves along the Underground Railroad.
