Local Marine surprises son at kindergarten graduation

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Scooter Smith has been deployed overseas for over seven months, and on Wednesday he was reunited with his whole family.

“Being home, it's like heaven to me,” Smith said. “To be back reunited with family and back on American soil.”

“It's extremely challenging,” he said. “Mostly, you miss them, and you long for the day to come back home to them.”

Smith’s son, Owen, is in Kindergarten at Alex R. Kennedy Elementary School. Wednesday was his promotion ceremony.

“It just so happened I was back in time for graduation, and I wanted to be here,” Smith said. “They told me 'Hey, we want to surprise him.' and I said that was a great idea.

Owen’s name was called last at the graduation and when his dad stepped out from behind the curtain, his face lit up.

“This is a moment we won't ever forget,” Smith said. “It’s like heaven. I don't know how else to describe it. I really don't.”
