LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The U of L baseball Cardinals began what they hope is a long post-season run with a 9-5 victory over Wake Forest Wednesday night in Durham, North Carolina.
The Cardinals won the ACC Tournament opener behind another strong performance on the mound from Kade McClure and a heavy dose of long balls.
McClure gave up a couple of first-inning runs but settled down and gave up no more in six innings of work. He fanned a season-high 11 Deamon Decons.
Blake Tiberi gave U of L the lead for good with a two-run homer to right in the fourth inning for a 3-2 lead. Will Smith's three-run homer to center in the fifth made it 6-2. And that was followed by a huge blast over the Bull in left field by Nick Solak. Smith homered again in the 8th while Solak was robbed of making it back-to-back homers for the second time on the night by a leaping catch in center.
The Cardinals have now won ten in a row and 17 of their last 18. They are 47-10 and will play Clemson Friday at 11:00 AM in the second game of pool play.
