It's opening weekend for many pools, but not all are ready for you to dive in

It's opening weekend for many pools across the area, but not all of them are ready for you to dive in.

“There's no questions there's a general shortage across the whole industry of aquatics,” said Steve Tarver, Greater Louisville YMCA CEO.

The fence around the pool at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park will stay locked this Memorial Day weekend.

“We set our pay rate at the appropriate level and just have not gotten a lot of recruitment action out of it. We have seven life guards right now,” said Nick Price E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park Program Director.

The goal is to staff 12 lifeguards. One day at the pool requires seven. Fully-staffed or not, the pool will likely open June 4.

Metro Parks is looking for help too, but it won't stop the gates from opening.

“We have enough lifeguards to open. We are a little behind in numbers, but with the positive response to this, it looks like we are going to be able to fill some positions. The good news is we will be filling this pool tomorrow with people,” said Marty Storch, Deputy Parks and Recreation Director.

Metro Parks wants to employ 55 to 60 lifeguards this summer.

“We have a little more than 30 now that are on board. A few more that have applied today,” Storch said.

Your local indoor YMCA pool is open all year round, making it easier to staff the life guard stand in the summer. However, if you're looking to jump into a summer job, even the Y is hiring.

"We have a number of pools, each open about 100 hours a week, year-round,” Tarver said.

Whether it's the hours or the pay, the reason for the life guard shortage is unclear.

Tarver says he's looking for quality people to fill the role.

"This is a very serious job," he said.
