FDA proposes new guidelines that would cut salt added to food

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The FDA has proposed new salt level guidelines for the food industry.

It wants to cut salt added to food by 1/3 over the next 10 years.

The FDA says nine in 10 Americans eat too much sodium, sometimes 50 percent more than recommended. That explains why one in three Americans suffers from high blood pressure.

Experts say reducing sodium consumption by 12 percent could prevent 32,000 heart attacks and 20,000 strokes a year.
